Early cartographers gave Tampa Bay different names. Spanish-language maps dating back to 1584 identify Tampa Bay as Baya de Spirito Santo (Holy Spirit Bay). A map dated 1695 identifies the area as Tampa Bay. McKay retired as head coach after the 1984 season after nine years at the helm of the Buccaneers boat.
In the years since McKay's departure, Leeman Bennett, Ray Perkins, Richard Williamson, Sam Wyche and Tony Dungy have served as Tampa Bay's head coaches. The Tampa Bay Area has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), although due to its location on the Florida Peninsula, in Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, it shows some characteristics of a tropical climate.
The Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority (TBARTA) develops bus, light rail and other transportation options for the seven-county Tampa Bay area. However, there are times, depending on the public and especially on international markets, when they feel the need to explain that these cities are part of the Tampa Bay region due to the amount of visibility that sports teams receive. Previously, Tampa's ground transportation links consisted of sandy highways that stretched across the Florida countryside. Since the 1970s, Tampa Bay has been the national, dominant, and global descriptor of the group of cities surrounding the mass of water.
