While the quest to bring a Major League Baseball franchise to the Tampa Bay area intensified in the early 1980s, it's no exaggeration to say that it began in the early 20th century. An interesting side effect of the identity of this area is that many people outside the region think that the Tampa Bay Rays play in Tampa.
